Laser Periodontal Therapy (LANAP)

LANAP Periodontal Surgery

Laser Periodontal Therapy

Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) is an FDA-approved procedure for treating moderate to severe gum disease. Instead of a scalpel, as in traditional periodontal surgery, it uses a precisely focused laser to remove the diseased gum tissue without affecting the healthy tissue.

The laser not only destroys the bad bacteria, it also stimulates the body’s natural regenerative potential, usually eliminating the need for gum grafting around the teeth.

Dr. Hendry is highly trained and experienced in using LANAP to effectively defeat gum disease. As periodontists they have many years of specialist training in diagnosing and treating conditions related to the gums.

Benefits of the LANAP Procedure

The LANAP procedure causes much less discomfort than standard surgery, both during and after the procedure, as well as faster healing and predictable results.

It takes two 2-hour visits and two follow up visits, compared to traditional surgery with the scalpel, which requires four sessions of about an hour apiece, plus several visits for suture removal and additional check-ups. Rather than weeks, there’s less than a 24 hour-recovery period with LANAP and most people feel good enough to eat anything they want right after the procedure.

Due to the minimally invasive nature of the procedure, there is maximum preservation of the original gum tissue. LANAP is safe for patients with health concerns such as diabetes, HIV, hemophilia, or those taking medications, including Plavix or aspirin. LANAP provides long-lasting results. A study showed that after five years, 98% of LANAP-treated patients remained stable.

LANAP Protocol Explained

The LANAP Protocol relies on the use of special laser equipment, the Perio-Lase MVP-7, which includes a miniscule laser fiber measuring about the width of three human hairs.  During the procedure, which is typically performed under general anesthesia, the laser fiber is placed below the gum line to gently and precisely remove infected and diseased tissue, without causing damage to surrounding, healthy gum tissue.

Next, the teeth can undergo deep cleaning to remove plaque and tartar that have built up around the roots and compromised oral health.  Once this procedure is complete, the laser is used again, with a different setting, to seal the affected area and create blood clots that speed the healing process.  Because the LANAP protocol has been proven to promote new cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone, it is currently the only protocol to receive FDA approval for True Regeneration.

In order to perform this technique, dentists must first undergo comprehensive training that includes clinical experience, before earning certification.  This ensures that anyone performing the LANAP protocol has the training and experience to deliver optimal results.

The LANAP Protocol is a minimally-invasive, out-patient procedure, and many patients are able tor return to normal activities within just 24 hours.  This is because your gums will not be cut and the laser will stimulate a healing response that minimizes recovery time.  You’ll need just two visits for treatment, with each visit focusing on half of your mouth.  The LANAP Protocol is an ideal method for treating moderate to severe gum disease.

Gum Treatment Consultation

Digital X-rays with our 3D cone beam scanner provide detailed information for our doctors, which they use to plan your treatment on advanced computer software.

Dr. Hendry will perform a complimentary oral exam to see if you’re a candidate for LANAP. You’ll get an opportunity to discuss concerns, have treatment options explained and get any questions answered. If needed, we will take digital X-rays of your mouth to make a more precise diagnosis and to discover the extent of the gum disease. For a closer look, or if they suspect other issues in the mouth or jaw, we will take 3D X-rays using our cone beam CT scanner.

We will also take the time to explain the procedure thoroughly ahead of time, so there are no surprises on the day of treatment.

Treatment day

When you return for your first LANAP Procedure treatment, you’ll get a local anesthetic to eliminate any discomfort. LANAP Procedure is much less traumatic then conventional surgery, but if desired, sedation can be used for a comfortable appointment.

We use a soft-tissue laser with a fiber about the thickness of three hairs. This is inserted between your teeth and gums to eliminate bacteria and diseased gum tissue. Healthy gum tissue is not harmed in the process. Once this is done, we use an ultrasonic scaler and special hand instruments to remove tartar from the root surfaces. Lastly, the laser is used to finish cleaning the gum pocket and to assist in sealing the pocket so new germs cannot enter. The gum heals, re-attaching to the clean surface of the tooth root.

The procedure is quick. It takes just two 2-hour sessions, or you have the option to have it all done in one treatment. Most people return to work the next day.

What Is LANAP?

LANAP stands for “laser assisted new attachment procedure.” It’s a fairly new alternative to traditional gum surgery, and was approved by the FDA in 1999. LANAP uses laser technology to remove infected gum tissue without ever making an incision or requiring any sutures.

LANAP, which is sometimes referred to as laser periodontal surgery or LANAP perio, is significantly less invasive than previous treatments for advanced gum disease. LANAP perio is a great alternative for anyone suffering from dental anxiety, or anyone simply looking for a faster, easier, more comfortable gum disease treatment.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, otherwise known as periodontal disease or periodontitis, is an infection of the gum tissue caused by the buildup of plaque, tartar, and harmful bacteria in the mouth. The primary cause of gum disease is poor oral hygiene.

Periodontal disease has three distinct stages: gingivitis, periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis. Gingivitis is curable, but after the condition has advanced to periodontitis, it can only be treated.

Advantages of Laser Periodontal Surgery

There are many reasons why LANAP perio is superior to traditional gum surgery. If you’re the type of person who avoids receiving dental care because you’re worried about the discomfort it may cause, this procedure could be exactly what you need.
Read on for more details about the advantages of LANAP perio.

Minimally Invasive

Traditional gum surgery requires that incisions be made in the gum tissue, which means a more invasive procedure that requires sutures afterwards. Laser technology allows for you to receive the same sort of treatment without a single incision or sutures.

Less Discomfort

Because the lasers used in LANAP perio are so precise, they cause significantly less damage to the surrounding areas of your mouth, which means the procedure requires you to endure far less discomfort overall.

Extremely Effective

LANAP perio doesn’t only feel better, it works better. Traditional gum disease treatment has an estimated success rate of about 87%, which is an impressive number until you compare it to the estimated success rate of laser periodontal surgery, which stands at 100%.

Fast Recovery

Traditional gum disease treatment requires an invasive procedure, and it takes time to recover from. Typically, that recovery period will be 10 to 14 days. LANAP perio recovery is much faster, requiring around 24 hours before the patient feels like themselves again.

Do I Need Laser Periodontal Surgery?

You’ll want to speak with your periodontist in order to determine whether or not you’re in need of treatment for any stage of gum disease, but there are some telltale signs that you can look for prior to your consultation.

Signs of gum disease include:

  • Tender or swollen gums
  • Gums that bleed easily
  • Bad breath (halitosis)
  • Receding gum line
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Abscesses around teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • Tooth loss

Remember: Just because you have any of these symptoms doesn’t mean you necessarily have gum disease, and even if you do have gum disease, that doesn’t always mean you’re in need of laser periodontal therapy.

It’s important to consult your periodontist first and try to avoid self-diagnosis.

Who Should Not Receive Laser Periodontal Surgery?

While there is a wide array of people for whom LANAP perio would be a successful procedure, it’s not perfect for everyone.

You should not consider receiving laser periodontal therapy unless you are committed to maintaining good, consistent oral hygiene after your gums have been treated. If you can’t keep up with your oral care, you’ll be back in the laser periodontist’s office before you know it.

The LANAP Laser Treatment Procedure

If your periodontist determines that you’re a good candidate for LANAP perio, they’ll probably give you a brief rundown of what to expect on the day of your appointment. That rundown will likely look a bit like the following explanation.

First, you’ll receive an oral examination, during which time your periodontist will probe your gum tissue to see the extent of the infection and determine a treatment plan.

Next, your periodontist will apply a local anesthetic and then use the laser to begin removing the bacteria from the pockets in your gums.

Then, they’ll use specialized instruments to remove infection-causing tartar from your teeth.
After that, they’ll use the laser to reattach gum tissue to the tooth root.

Finally, they’ll do what’s called an occlusal adjustment, which involves making the tooth surface rough in order to discourage further tartar formation.

How Long Does Laser Perio Treatment Take?

The answer to this question depends mostly on the severity of the gum disease and the extent of the treatment, but typically you can expect your laser periodontal surgery to be completed in about an hour or two.

In certain instances in which the gum disease is particularly severe, it may take two different sessions to complete.

Laser Perio Treatment Recovery

Perhaps the most amazing thing about LANAP perio is just how quick the recovery period is. While traditional gum surgery takes somewhere between 10 days and two weeks and involves significantly more discomfort, LANAP will take you just about 24 hours to recover from, and even then, it shouldn’t hinder your daily life at all.
